Your Cat Depends on You for Food

You can Keep your Cat Healthy by Being InformedAnn and Scooter

I loved Scooter the Siamese Cat with all my heart. He stuck with me through thick and thin. He was a great cat, a loyal, loving friend and my companion for nearly half of my life. I wanted the best for Scooter, just like a good parent wants the best for her child. And in that spirit, I did everything that my vet, Dr. J, recommended in order to keep him healthy. Little did I know how wrong she was.

During a routine check up Dr. J.told me he had the early stages of kidney disease. Naturally, I was very concerned. But he continued to look normal and act normal, so I assumed things couldn’t be that bad. I improved his diet with expensive prescription dry and canned cat food recommended by the vet. He had a few Pounce treats every day, too. I was doing all the things that the doctor recommended, so what could go wrong? He was a strong, healthy cat. He could overcome anything, right?

As he got older, the kidney disease became more prominent. He slowed down, had little appetite and lost weight. In the last year of his life, I had to give him subcutaneous fluids several times a week. It was an unpleasant process for both of us. Eventually the fluids could no longer compensate for the progressing disease. His weight dropped to three pounds and he began to deteriorate rapidly. It was agonizing to watch. Yet there was nothing I could do to help him at that point and nothing any vet could do either.  In his last weeks, I fed him liquids from a dropper every few hours to try to get him hydrated because he wouldn't drink. It was heart-wrenching process for me and a very painful decline for him. Eventually my strong, spirited cat that had lived such a vigorous, adventure-filled life died of kidney disease. I was with him at the end. I held him close as I felt his very last heartbeat. When he died, my heart was absolutely broken. I had lost my dearest friend.

After his passing, our home was too quiet and still without his loud Siamese voice and strong spirit. I decided to devote some time learning about kidney disease in cats as a tribute to Scooter. I had to figure out where things went wrong and I wanted to make sure that the next cat I raised would not suffer like Scooter did.

I dove into research on the diseases that kill our cats, especially kidney disease. With some guidance from a progressive holistic vet (Dr. Kimberly Parker) and many hours on Google, I learned that what is considered a “good, healthy diet” for cats really isn’t one at all! Traditional cat food actually is almost void of good, absorbable nutrition and is the primary cause of kidney disease, diabetes, and probably cancer. The deeper I dug into the problem, the madder I got. Scooter’s illness was preventable!

I discovered that the cat food industry looks at cats in the same way that the fast food industry looks at people. They serve the cheapest food they can find, prepared to look good and taste good, supported by carefully crafted advertising. It is a way to make lots of money but the health of the consumers is not a concern. Of course, in a capitalistic society, the slogan of "buyer beware" applies especially well in nutrition, whether it is cats or people.

So I identified THE PROBLEM: most commercial cat food is not good for cats. Then I focused on THE SOLUTION: what do we feed our cats so they can be healthy and well?
